Gas, water or both: who to call

Most plumbing and heating jobs fall into one of two groups, and the group decides who may legally do the work. Anything that touches gas, such as a boiler, a gas fire, a cooker or the gas pipework, needs a Gas Safe registered engineer who is also competent for that particular kind of gas work (HSE: domestic gas FAQs). So boiler repair, boiler installation and gas safety certificates are gas jobs.

Water-only jobs, such as leaks and burst pipes, a new toilet or most bathroom fitting, do not need Gas Safe registration. For those, the check to look for is the WaterSafe directory of approved plumbers; it is voluntary, not a legal requirement. Heating work sits in between: bleeding or replacing a radiator is water work, but if the job means working on the boiler itself, it becomes gas work. Radiators and heating and power flushing explain where that line falls.

Each service page explains what the job involves, what is safe to check yourself, and the questions to ask before anyone starts, with the source for every figure. It then lists the plumbers who offer that service, ranked by verified customer review score. Each profile says whether we have checked the firm’s Gas Safe number yet. If water is coming through a ceiling right now, go straight to emergency plumber.

Questions about plumbing and heating services

Is a plumber the same as a heating engineer?

Not always. A plumber works on water supply, waste, taps, toilets and pipework. A heating engineer works on boilers and central heating, and needs Gas Safe registration for any gas appliance. Many firms do both; each profile here lists the services that firm offers.

Does a new boiler need building regulations approval?

Yes, fitting a new boiler is notifiable building work, but a Gas Safe installer can self-certify it under the Building Regulations through a competent person scheme. GOV.UK says you should get the certificate within 8 weeks of the work being finished.

Who fixes a leak on the pipe outside my house?

It depends where the leak is. Pipes inside your boundary are usually the owner's responsibility, while the water main in the street belongs to the water company. Our leaks and burst pipes page explains how to tell which is which and who to call.

Which service do I choose for a landlord gas safety check?

Gas safety certificates. The law calls it a landlord gas safety record: a check of every gas appliance and flue within every 12 months, carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, with a copy for tenants within 28 days.
